  40.         Meet the Ichijyos (and the Lynns and the Jeniuses ...)</B><P>

  42.         Grand space opera, popular music, and transforming mecha aside, the main
  43.         underpinning of <FONT SIZE="-1">MACROSS</FONT> has always been the characters. The creators have
  44.         called it "a small love triangle story against the backdrop of war,"
  45.         and that is how it has been through the multiple incarnations of these past
  46.         fifteen years.<BR>

  49.         HSPACE=12>Whether it is the original trio of fighter pilot Hikaru, career officer
  50.         Misa, and idol singer Minmay or <FONT SIZE="-1">MACROSS 7</FONT>'s Basara, Mylene, and Gamlin, this
  51.         emphasis has remained. <FONT SIZE="-1">ROSE OF VERSAILLES</FONT> or <FONT SIZE="-1">MARMALADE BOY</FONT> it is not, but
  52.         <FONT SIZE="-1">MACROSS</FONT> distinguishes itself within the space science fiction genre with its
  53.         focus on the involved—albeit sometimes overwrought—relationships.<BR>

  57.         themselves, and the happy couples become families. The story of <FONT SIZE="-1">MACROSS</FONT> now
  58.         covers almost half a century, and as a result, we have families of
  59.         characters extending three generations.<BR>

  64.         series and have their own daughter Miku. Bridge operator Vanessa
  65.         has no less than three kids with former Zentradi spy Loli. Through ace
  66.         pilots Max and Milia Jenius, the <FONT SIZE="-1">MACROSS 7</FONT> series and its heroine Mylene
  67.         Jenius have a connection to the first Macross series. (To be sure, Basara's
  68.         <EM>lack</EM> of a known family background is integral to the
  69.         <FONT SIZE="-1">MACROSS 7</FONT> story.)<BR>

  73.         offscreen in the first (and thus far only) novel volume. Myung's biologist
  74.         father and musically-inclined mother cultivated her love for nature and
  75.         singing. Guld's Zentradi father and Human mother pioneered the scientific
  76.         exploration of the United Nation's first interstellar colony planet Eden.
  77.         Finally, Isamu's father was a deep space pilot missing in action since
  78.         before Isamu's birth.<BR>
